Duration: 14 Nights / 15 Days
Start: Tokyo
End: Tokyo
Guide: Jun Matsui
Best Time: January – February

This immersive 15-day winter birding journey showcases the very best of Japan’s cold-season wildlife, taking you from the dynamic urban landscapes of Tokyo to the frozen wilderness of Hokkaido.

Designed for birders and photographers alike, the tour combines iconic species, dramatic landscapes, and rich cultural experiences. Highlights include the vast crane flocks of Arasaki and Akan, the snow-covered forests of the Japanese Alps, and the coastal ice-edge ecosystems of the Shiretoko Peninsula.

Throughout the journey, we target some of Japan’s most sought-after winter species. Encounters may include thousands of Hooded and White-naped Cranes, the immense Steller’s Sea Eagle along drift ice, and the unforgettable experience of observing the endangered Blakiston’s Fish Owl at close range. In addition to birdlife, we also visit the famous snow monkeys, where Japanese Macaque bathe in steaming hot springs surrounded by snow—one of Japan’s most iconic wildlife spectacles.

The tour offers exceptional photographic opportunities, with winter conditions providing striking backdrops of snow, ice, and soft light. From cranes in misty fields to eagles perched on pack ice, every day presents unique chances for powerful and atmospheric imagery.

Blending world-class birding with cultural immersion, this tour also introduces traditional Japanese accommodation, cuisine, and etiquette, all led by an experienced, Japanese-speaking guide. It is an outstanding opportunity to explore one of the most fascinating and visually captivating birding destinations in the world.
