Over 14 days, we explore a diverse range of habitats, from the lowland rainforests of Western Province and the mighty Fly River to the cool montane forests of the Highlands and the forests surrounding Port Moresby. Along the way, we will search for many of New Guinea's most iconic birds, including several spectacular Birds-of-Paradise, bowerbirds, crowned pigeons, parrots and numerous endemic species found nowhere else on Earth.
Highlights include time in the remote forests around Kiunga and Kwatu, where river journeys and traditional village accommodation provide an authentic New Guinea experience, as well as several days in the Highlands around Kumul Lodge, one of Papua New Guinea's most famous birding destinations.
The cultural highlight of the tour is attendance at the world-renowned Mount Hagen Show. Bringing together sing-sing groups from across Papua New Guinea, the event is an extraordinary celebration of the country's cultural diversity, featuring traditional costumes, music, dancing and ceremonial displays. The show provides a fascinating complement to the birding, with many traditional headdresses incorporating feathers from birds that have played an important role in local culture for generations.
