Destinations: Rinyirru National Park & Lockhart River Duration: 6 Nights, 7 Days Tour Date:11th - 17thSeptember 2025
This is a 7-day/6-night trip exploring this great destination. Starting in Cairns we drive north soon we leave the lush rainforests of the Wet Tropics and head into the dry country towards Mt Carbine and then on up the Cape Developmental Road. While there are now long distances of sealed road there is still enough unsealed road to cause inexperienced driver’s problems. Driving through dry savannah with prickly grasses and shrubs and only small trees, the avifauna changes and we will be looking for dry country birds. Our first destination is Musgrave Roadhouse where we will base to explore Rinyirru (formerly Lakefield) National Park and have time to photograph the beautiful Golden-shouldered Parrots. From Musgrave we head north to Lockhart River and Iron Range with its very special suite of birds some of which it shares with New Guinea and some of which are endemic to Cape York itself.
