New Caledonia 2026

Destination: New Caleondia
Duration: 7 Nights, 8 Days

Description:

This 8-day / 7-night birding tour explores one of the Pacific’s most unique and rewarding destinations, starting and ending in Nouméa, New Caledonia’s vibrant capital. The itinerary is based primarily in Nouméa and covers the island’s most important birding sites, including Parc Provincial de la Rivière Bleue and Parc des Grandes Fougères, along with day trips to the Loyalty Islands of Lifou and Ouvea.

New Caledonia and the adjacent Loyalty Islands are a true highlight for birders, supporting a highly distinctive avifauna with 21 extant endemic bird species. Remarkably, all but three of these can be found on the main island of Grande Terre, and many can be seen with relative ease.

The undisputed jewel of the region is the iconic Kagu, often referred to as the “Grey Ghost.” This extraordinary species is the sole member of its own ancient lineage and was brought back from the brink of extinction through intensive conservation efforts in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, it remains one of the world’s most sought-after birds.

A visit to Parc Provincial de la Rivière Bleue offers the opportunity to see the majority of Grande Terre’s endemic species in a single, well-protected reserve. Key targets here include Kagu, Crow Honeyeater, Cloven-feathered Dove, New Caledonian Imperial Pigeon, Horned Parakeet, New Caledonian Parakeet, New Caledonian Friarbird, Barred Honeyeater, New Caledonian Myzomela, New Caledonian Whistler, Yellow-bellied Flyrobin, New Caledonian Cuckooshrike, Green-backed White-eye, Striated Starling, and Red-throated Parrotfinch.

Parc des Grandes Fougères, located approximately one hour north of Nouméa, provides complementary birding in well-preserved forest habitat. While many species overlap with Rivière Bleue, this site is particularly reliable for the remarkable New Caledonian Crow, one of the few bird species known to use tools to extract food. The elusive Horned Parakeet is also often more easily observed here.

The mountainous spine of Grande Terre supports unique flora and fauna, including Amborella, one of the world’s most ancient flowering plants, and offers opportunities for more elusive species such as the New Caledonian Thicketbird.

The tour also includes visits to the Loyalty Islands of Ouvea and Lifou, which host their own localized specialties. Highlights include the endangered Ouvea Parakeet and the distinctive Large Lifou White-eye and Small Lifou White-eye, along with a range of island-adapted species.

New Caledonia is an overseas territory of France, and the French influence is strong throughout. French is the primary language, vehicles drive on the right-hand side, and signage is predominantly in French. Throughout the tour, we are assisted by bilingual local guides, ensuring smooth logistics and effective communication.
